HISTORY

SWAG is new on the scene, but we have a rich history!

The SW Advocacy Group formed in February 2010 and immediately began working to identify the needs in the SW Gainesville area and work towards solutions.  We filed for non-profit status on August 13, 2010.

On Aug. 31, 2010, the Alachua County Commissioners voted unanimously to allocate funds to purchase and renovate a building in the heart of our SWAG neighborhoods to serve as a family resource center in SW Gainesville. Our SWAG Family Resource Center strives to meet the needs of families and children in our area by providing support and connection to services in this historically under-served area.

Before there was SWAG, there was the Preservation and Enhancement District made up of residents from the Linton Oaks, Gordon Manor and Holly Heights communities.  This community group assists Alachua County's Partners for a Productive Community (PPC), a department within the County's Community Support Services.

The Preservation and Enhancement District was created to assist the neighborhood restoration efforts of the PPC Program in the Sugarfoot/Linton Oaks and the Cedar Ridge/Gordon Manor communities. Its members succeeded in having the neighborhoods designated as Preservation and Enhancement Districts, thereby allowing them to function as a neighborhood association. This designation was the first of its kind in the state of Florida.

In 2004, their bid for a non ad valorem tax assessment on owners was successful. The monies collected are used to make and maintain neighborhood improvements.

SWAG and members of the Preservation and Enhancement District began working together in 2010, and the rest is history!

Although Preservation and Enhancement's members' main focus by necessity are the three neighborhoods where their assessments are collected, they share SWAG's goals of advocating for and improving the lives of SW Gainesville residents.  SWAG and the Preservation and Enhancement group began working together in February 2010, and many of the Preservation members are also SWAG members.

The collaboration between SWAG and the Preservation and Enhancement District of Linton Oaks, Gordon Manor and Holly Heights has been invaluable in helping us reach our goals.

SWAG's focus includes the following SW Gainesville communities:  Majestic Oaks, Linton Oaks, Tower Oaks, Gordon Manor, Holly Heights, Hidden Oak Mobile Home Park, and Harbor Cove.

"SWAG’s members are our greatest asset!"
